Toyota Supra (A80)
That large rear wing gets most of the attention. The carpet was contributing too. Toyota’s original A80 launch material describes hollow fibres under the occupants’ feet, which is a wonderfully unglamorous thing to find inside a car with such a glamorous reputation.

Toyota GR86
Bigger engine. More power. Fine, that fits comfortably on a launch poster. The GR86’s more interesting change is where the torque arrives. I went looking for the number with an rpm beside it, because that is where this upgrade starts explaining itself.

Toyota MR2
The little green MR2 has a wing that has clearly appointed itself team captain. It is a Hot Wheels ’Tooned interpretation, so literal proportions were never the assignment. The real MR2 made its own, rather more consequential rearrangement: the engine went behind the occupants.

Forty-two millimetres. That is the clearance Toyota specified between the manual Supra’s gear knob and the air-conditioning panel. Somewhere in the excitement about getting a clutch pedal, somebody still had to make sure you could change gear without punching the dashboard.
